Curated by Elpida Karampa and Glykeria Stathopoulou Riverboat in Hoi An, pencil and watercolours on paper, 22,8 x 15 cm, 2017 Ever since he was a child, Nikos Arvanitis used to be thrilled by family friend S.K.’s narrations of journeys; journeys that spanned hundreds of miles, meticulously and methodically organised, journeys in places that were chosen for their significant political, historical and cultural content. These journeys were often lonely and took place under adverse circumstances. S.K. narrates one of his recent trips to Vietnam and shares his experiences, his research while preparing for the trip, the methodology of travelling, his discoveries and his impressions, as well as the process of processing these experiences at a later date. Beyond the narration of the experience of travelling the artist attempts to illustrate an abstracted and fragmented portrait of a person and the experience of their relationship and contact. The work is composed of 16 watercolours that act as intermediated notes of a journey.
